THE GRAND CANYON TIME MACHINE

THE GRAND CANYON TIME MACHINE: A Comprehensive Interpretive Portrayal takes the reader on a virtual sightseeing, educational jaunt along the South Rim’s Grand Canyon Village sector. This traveler’s guidebook covers all aspects of the canyon: geology, natural and human history, including six addenda on the relevant subject matter (i.e., facts about the Colorado Plateau, a lexicon of geologic terms, and things to do and places to see in the village). Using the so-named interpretive walking timeline trail as a means to disseminate information to the reader, the text presents common details in an uncommon way. Specifically, an informal style of writing that changes the academics of geoscience, natural and human history into a casual parlance employed by many guides addressing tour groups. This informative and factual text, therefore, feigns its own tour along the South Rim (near Grand Canyon Village) only in a literary sense while explaining details without sermonizing.

The diverse subject matter is broken down into segments so that the reader is not overwhelmed by too much information based on any topic. For example, the geological aspects of the canyon are presented at various overlooks. Between these segments, new subject matter is introduced (also segmented). The following Table of Contents demonstrates this feature of the book. Given the layout of the text, especially, the piecemeal presentation of information The Grand Canyon Time Machine is a reader-friendly text that engages and enlightens readers.

While there are scores of books written about the Grand Canyon, this book in the guise of an actual tour on the rim engenders a unique approach to learning and will attract a wide reading audience. Thus, an interpretive account of essential information (i.e., geology, human, and natural history), as well as incidental information about hiking trails, as well as helpful tourist information (i.e., places to visit, restaurants, and lodging).

Employing a National Park Service heuristic teaching standard based on an interpretive explanation, the how-what-where-when-why aspects of the Grand Canyon are presented throughout this comprehensive text. Accordingly, an educational tour de force that thoroughly explains all the essential information based on the motif of a time machine and time travelers walking along the rim.
